BERNARD PICON In the Way of Life Survey (INSEE, 1988-1989), each of the 6807 households included in the sample was asked to provide information on its hunting, fishing and gathering activities. Data analysis brings evidence of the hierarchy between these activities : gathering is the most widespread activity, fishing follows, and hunting comes last. These three activities are presented as basically working class practices. Hunting and gathering are characterized by a real and symbolic anchoring within rural culture. appears however to be a leisure unconnected with the rural world
