PHILIPPE ROBERT In the first part, the relationship between penal sociology and history is tested in relation to recent developments in both disciplines : an important increase of historical research in that field over the last 15 years, and sociology reviving a tradition of analysis of penal statistics which leads it to witness breaks and reconstructions inside penal economy. But a dialogue between the two disciplines, though necessary, cannot be reduced to confronting points of view or to borrowing from each other. In order to make confrontation fruitful, it has proved necessary first to mark out the field, then to carefully build up cooperation
