An overview of the first French sociological works on the homeless Since the 1990' s, research on homeless people has been developed in France. This article reports the first qualitative approaches, most of them supported by the research branch of the French Housing Department, the Plan Urbain. To understand such a "social problem", we first need to describe thoroughly the diversity of social circumstances in which the homeless find themselves, while keeping in mind the views of the people being interviewed. This paper summarizes the contributions and the limits of this work, placing it within its social context as well as noting its relationship with the sociology of poverty. We focus on the effects of survival in the streets as well as the relationships between the homeless and the social services. We think it is important to understand the changes in identity faced by the homeless, due not only to their living conditions but also to the methods of social welfare developed for them
