FRANÇOISE CRIBIER Among the ten million retired persons in France, nearly 25% cohabitate with someone who is neither a spouse nor a child younger than 25. Even at older ages there are more cohabitants than people in institutions. This paper shows the importance, forms and evolution of the phenomenon. It is based on census data and field- work with retired persons. Despite commonly held views, exchange between generations is shown to be "reciprocal". The role of demographic characteristics, social condition, housing, size of towns, and other variables is analyzed. Coresidence is also shown to vary widely across regions
