Industrial Reconversion and Cultural Transformation at The Lorrain Iron Mines in the Mid 60s The paper presents the context and the forms of the first actions taken during the industrial reconversion of the iron mines in Lorraine, as well as the emphasis placed on training. The author develops an analysis which strongly deviates from that one transmitted by the common memory: the training was not, as it is generally asserted, a universal commodity desired by all people, namely by the miners left without jobs. On the contrary, it took shape through a set of actions proposed by different categories of actors in favor of transformations. Thus, training has been implemented after long negotiations among them who represented various positions (training considered as a means towards a more egalitarian society versus towards a more efficient economy). The lorrain experience represents the beginning of the doctrine of further education and served to test new educational methods and practices. It has been disseminated among scholars, politicians and grass roots workers and served as a model to the promoters of the 1971 Law recognizing further education and training
