MARCEL DRULHE, SERGE CLÉMENT What effect does donating property have on the way the donor is taken care of when he or she is dependent in old age ? This study is based on an analysis of a series of monographs describing seventy-four elderly people living in a rural area of Southwestern France exhibiting a high rate of coresidence between parents and one adult child. It goes beyond purely economic considerations. On the one hand, there is the ideal model of cohabitation based on an unequal distribution of property. On the other hand, we can observe many concrete cases indicating new solutions corresponding to current changes in society as while. These new solutions are built around four variables : the size of the inheritance, the socio-professional dynamic of the donor, the sibling structure of the inheritors, the strength of the model of family assistance
