MICHEL! FIRRAND, FRANCOISI IMMRf This paper presents how both questionnaires and interviews dealing with life history data provide information on the occupational life of the individuals. In order to study this problem, we have designed a specific research scheme : life history interviews have been conducted with a sub sample of the 1986-1987 INSEE survey of Life styles. The comparison of the two sources and the elaboration of cross comparisons of life history patterns evidences a number of problems depending on which method, qualitative or quantitative is used : namely, the relevant life history events are neither selected nor interpreted in the same manner in both cases. Our research design reveals the benefit of using both methods, interview and questionnaires for the intelligence of occupational and social patterns
