Oxen stealing in Betsileo land. Oxen stealing is an old phenomenon which renewed after 1973 and spread out in the west of Madagascar, especially in Betsileo. The stealers, who are young, attack in groups by surprise. Various «Dina» or self defence collective agreements were devised by the village people to protect themselves but they were then forbidden by the authorities who feared to loose control. These preferred military operations followed by the execution of the stealers without trials. The stealings are proof of a serious social crisis underlying in rural Betsileo but also of the existence of high ranking people pulling the ropes «white collar sharks» building up a capital to be reinvested in real estates or other businesses
