In this study the relationship between women's employment and actual, desired and expected fertility in the province of Quebec is analysed using 1971 survey data. Given the sharp decline in Catholic fertility over the past 20 years, which implies a wide use of effective contraception and, therefore, rational family planning, the micro-econonic framework was used as an explanatory scheme. The findings indicate that economic factors are important determinants of employment and fertility, but less so than factors associated with the life cycle. It is further shown that in all three models tested, there is no reciprocal relationship between employment and fertility. A general conclusion that emerges from the findings is that in this sample of Catholic women, a more traditional orientation that places greater importance on the mother role as opposed to the worker role is still prevalent
