Sterilization as a method of family planning was found popular in the State of Maharashtra. The Government of Maharashtra offered free facilities for male sterilization by holding camps all over the State. The present article describes the socio-economic-demographic composition of the people that underwent sterilization in 41 camps held in one district of the State. This district had the largest number of vasectomies in Maharashtra in 1960. 1·2 vasectomies per 1,000 population were conducted in the district. Though the effect of these vasectomies on the birth rate was likely to be small, a climate of opinion favourable to family planning was created in the district
