This paper discusses the theories of and the relationships between the direct and indirect methods of standardizing death rates for males, females, and persons. In the author's 1923 paper in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society the validity of the Registrar General's direct method was established, and the well-known approximate character of the usual procedure for Indirect standardization was emphasized. An epitome Is then given of the author's 1957 paper In the Transactions of the XVth International Congress of Actuaries, where an extended analysis may be found of the types of correction required, and resulting new formulae giving much closer approximations. If the indirect method is to be applied under various practical conditions when the original formulæ are not theoretically valid
