N INTRODUCTION is given to the modern theory of the expanding universe and the evidence that underpins it. The concept of the evolution of the universe is explained together with some of its consequences for the development of biochemical complexity. The implications of the picture of an early period of accelerated expansion, or inflation, in the history of the universe are discussed together with some of the possible consequences if the universe possesses a crenellated spatial structure in which space is joined both to itself and to other baby universes by wormholes. The special problems that arise when interpreting such theories in the light of observation and the need to understand which of their possible predictions are necessary ingredients for the evolution of observers are also introduced
