UR LIVES are glutted with words, and surfeit prompts revulsion from time to time. Then people cry down words and demand action instead. When Tom Hayden's sense of urgency lowered his tolerance for demonstrations and rallies some time back, it was typical of him to express impatience (in a speech, at a rally) by saying that he would probably never make another speech. When the time for guns is at hand, the time for words is past, we think. It is perfectly natural to draw this distinction between talking and more purely physical action. But doing so conceals the fact that speech is also action, distorts our understanding of both, and thus leads to confusion about how the world runs
