Knowing Tornadoes and Other Things

Claims that is gendered are often not suggestions that women's is in some way distinctive; they are rather claims, in the first instance anyway, that what one might call the standard body of in culture is pervaded by bias. For example, in the Introduction to a collection of essays with the striking title Discovering Reality, the editors, Sandra Harding and Merrill Hintikka, say that we cannot gain an understanding of human beings by adding facts about women to existing knowledge--because existing bodies of do not merely fail to cover women, but men, their lives and their beliefs as the human norm.' Harding and Hintikka make a very strong claim: they argue that is based on experience and that our prevailing claims to social and natural knowledge are based on masculine experience, as understood by men (x). Men's experience is different from women's, systematically different; science, as well as what more generally we take to be knowledge, is based on distinctively experience which is then, however, presumed to be gender-free. Harding and Hintikka thus conclude that theories, concepts, methodologies, inquiry goals and knowledge-claims pose as genderfree but, based as they are on experience, distort human social life and human thought (x).
