Which may explain the enduring concern over race in standardized testing: racial bias in IQ tests; the existence of a so-called racial “Bell Curve” and the admissions criteria in Affirmative Action programs. 2. A phenomenon that would be addressed by Ellison and Morrison among others later in the century. 3. Even as early as 1903 we must consider Du Bois a rather weak Black nationalist. In the history of ideas Du Bois was heavily influenced by Black nationalist thought of the nineteenth century but it is as much his modification of those ideas that characterizes his work as his adoption of them. For our purposes Moses is especially instructive in that he identifies the adaptation of civilizationist ideas as formative of Black nationalism. Black nationalism began—to a large degree—in response to the barbarity of white supremacy and is therefore civilizationist and normalizing at its core. Remarks made by Malcolm X and George Jackson certainly attest to the enduring qualities of this point of origin. A full examination of how Du Bois set himself apart from this tradition (first in his break with a racially libratory social science and eventually his dissatisfaction with bourgeois civilization en route to Marxism) would be worthy of exploration. 4. This is due in large part to the fact that we no longer think of civilization as a behavioral qualification. Which doesn't necessarily change its implicit operation but rather limits its expression to less obvious and more acceptable forms. 5. At this point can we really be certain what such a term means? For Sears and Kinder (1971: 63) survey results interpreted this to mean that: “Respondents do not believe in racial differences in intelligence, and there is virtually no support for segregated schools, segregated public accommodations, or job discrimination. Moreover, most of the sample recognizes the reality problems that Blacks face in contemporary American society. They perceive Negroes as being at a disadvantage in requesting services from the government, in trying to get jobs, and, in general, getting what they deserve. And they feel that integration can work: they feel the races can live comfortably together. Thus, by the conventional liberal standards there can be no question that these Valley voters are ‘race liberals.’” 6.
