El presente artículo se propone abordar el análisis de la disputa de soberanía en torno al peñón de Gibraltar entre el Reino de España y el Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda del Norte desde los estudios que ponderan el valor del territorio como un factor explicativo para la perdurabilidad de las disputas territoriales. El mismo se enmarca en una investigación más amplia que estudia la perdurabilidad de los diferendos internacionales en torno al territorio haciendo énfasis no en las cuestiones jurídicas o el derecho internacional sino en la geografía desde la valorización propia del territorio en disputa para las partes involucradas considerando que es un factor fundamental para explicar la irresolubilidad de las mismas
