This article outlines a methodology for reconstructing census-type listings of English parishes for the pre-census era. The methodology is offered as a possible way around the impasse created by the uneven and random survival of a relatively small number of contemporary listings of the period. Examples are drawn from a series of reconstructed listings for the parish of Highley in Shropshire from the seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries
