The queremismo, a social movement that, during 1945, aimed to keep Get ́ulio Vargas in political power, thrill great part of Brazilian society. This popular movement can only be compared to the political excitement caused by the National Liberating Alliance, in 1935, and the Diretas Ja in 1984. The queremismo challenges scholars with something which looks strange In the intellectual tradition either from a liberal or a leftist point of view: the dictatorship of the Estado Novo (New State) collapsed, but the political prestige of the dictator rose; a democratic regime is announced and, at the same time, workers demanded that Get ́ullo Vargas remains in power. The goal of this article is to undestand the Ideas, longings, believes, and political traditions which, vigorously expressed by workers and people who defined themselves as poor or common, built, between February and October of 1945, a way to believe, to define themselves, and to behave politically in Brazil
