Abstract Throughout Merleau-Ponty's intellectual path, the reflections on art play a crucial role in his concern of restituting the spectacle of the world, through the return to the springing of the meaning of being in the antepredicative experience given in perception. A signal of that is he wrote, in each moment of his thought, an essay in which the central theme is the contribution of the artistic expression to a philosophical reflection interested in the embodied human opening up to the world. This article addresses such essays - using a chronological approach - aiming to detach how they contribute for acknowledging the nuances and articulations of his thought, highlighting the ontological constant present in his discussions on art. Thus, the work performs a horizontal view on Merleau-Ponty's path of thought - moving from the phenomenology of perception to the ontology of flesh -, with vertical incursions regarding to the relations between perception, expression, and institution in the essays. The hypothesis is that such themes provide the basis for understanding art as an experience of foundation of being
