A la fin des annees 60 et au debut des annees 70, une convergence d'interet dans le domaine de l'etude folklorique eut lieu. Cependant, meme si le folklore s'ouvrait au changement social, si le gouvernement soutenait la culture populaire americaine, l'ambivalence des roles joues par les folkloristes se revelait par l'abandon du terme controverse « folklore applique » et par l'adoption des termes « secteur public », puis « folklore public ». A cette date, l'engagement, la proximite et l'implication etaient les principaux problemes de discorde entre les differentes branches du folklore
