‘Out from the Shadows’ introduces a kind of gender analysis based principally on the work of twentieth-century psychoanalyst Carl Jung. It establishes three different manifestations of patriarchy, in which the term, ‘archetypal gender’ takes its place alongside sex and gender as a category of analysis, both distinct from and connected to the other two categories. It then describes Jung’s feminine and masculine principles, eros and logos, as well as their embodied counterparts, anima and animus. By combining Jung’s gendered archetypes with Pierre Bourdeiu’s understanding of a habitus, it presents the concept of the ‘Enlightenment habitus.’ Two case studies, a pair of ‘thought experiments’ then invite us to re-examine two relatively well-studied questions in light of this new kind of gendered analysis. The essay concludes by reflecting on why this type of analysis can be useful
