Atentando para a importância do teatro na vida brasileira do século XIX, este artigo procura examinar as características da crônica teatral. A crônica dedicada ao exercício da crítica a espetáculos é observada em sua forma embrionária e na forma consagrada de resenha semanal. Nota-se a especificidade da evolução do gênero, cuja escrita transita de uma preocupação com o texto e com o público para uma atenção quase exclusiva com a interpretação dos artistas.
