A contribution to the analysis of nonart images, this article examines the illustrations mobilized by Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling (1901-1994)in order to buttress his claim that "molecular complementariness" (the fit between two molecules) is the basis of life. Pauling's visuals resorted to the mutually supportive processes of figuration and de-monstration and were an integral part of his argumentative and heuristic strategies
