This study concerns the events and people associated with an incident involving Quakers in Bristol on October 24th 1656. What happened was presented as a great scandal and helped to precipitate change in Quakerism. It notes in particular (i) how popular presentations of the events are often simplistic and misleading, not least in their concentration on the role of women in what happened and (ii) that there has been a lack of scholarly concern to examine the nature and cause of disaffection among some women in the earliest decades of Quakerism
