C. Geertz, des 1906, a justement reconnu que la religion se manifestait par des symboles exprimant un univers conceptuel propre. Mais dans ses travaux ulterieurs, cet auteur a souvent oublie l'un des poles de sa definition, en privilegiant le symbolisme externe et en negligeant la base conceptuelle.
