locus classicus which summarizes much contemporary structuralist analysis of verbal discourse is Roman Jakobson's dictum in his 1960 essay Linguistics and Poetics: The poetic function projects the principle of equivalence from the axis of selection into the axis of combination (1972:95). text that immediately precedes and leads up to this statement, however, indicates that Jakobson is speaking not merely about literary discourse, but about a principle of all coherent discourse in general. basic modes of arrangement used in verbal behavior, selection and combination are in effect the two axes of choice that ground our construction of any text.
