The study of the meaning of literary texts literary semantics is a discipline with a venerable tradition. Recently, we have observed attempts to enrich literary semantics by ideas and insights developed in philosophical and logical semantics. This development which, in my opinion, is bound to become the most vital trend in literary theory, was certainly inspired by the exciting perspectives opened by the rapprochement between linguistic and textual semantics on the one hand, and logic and the philosophy of language on the other hand. While such symposia as Semantics of Natural Language (published in 1972) have been with us for some time, the first symposia of philosophers, logicians and literary theoreticians on formal semantics and literature have appeared only very recently (VS 1978, No. 19/20; Poetics, Vol. 8, No. 1/2, April 1979). These collections of articles reveal clearly the state of the exchange, its theoretical stimulation and its possible dangers: 1. Philosophical (logical) semantics dominates the dialogue. For this reason, the problem of fictionality emerges as the central problem of literary semantics. For philosophers and logicians, the distinction between reality and fiction, between truth and falsity, between reference and lack of reference, is a fundamental theoretical problem. Any philosophical and logico-semantic system has to offer a solution to this problem. Of course, the problem is not unknown in literary theory. Literary critics have not hesitated to use the concepts of fictionality, of truth in/of literature, truthfulness to life, etc., but the theoretical standard of critical discourse is rather low in this domain.' Aware of their theoretical weakness, students of literature have been inclined to accept the formulations and possible solutions to the
