In 1966, in a characterization of Russian Formalism, Girard Genette observed that literature had been considered as a message without a for so long that it had become necessary to consider it for a while as a without a message (Genette 1966:150). In this connection Genette quoted Roman Jakobson's definition of literariness (literaturnost'), but he could as well have referred to Shklovskij's one-sided interest in devices of literature and in making of literature, which led him to opinion that the things made are not important in art (Shklovskij 1925:101). Genette's acknowledgement of approach of Russian Formalists, Todorov's translations of Russian Formalists (1965), Jurij Striedter's bilingual edition of main texts of Russian Formalism (1969), and Roland Barthes's S/Z (1970) provided ground for term code becoming a household word in vocabulary of student of literature. In this way, we were rather well prepared for reading Jurij Lotman, whose Structure of Artistic Text appeared in Russian in 1970, in German in 1972 and 1973 (there were two German translations), in French in 1973, and in English in 1977, as well as for Umberto Eco, whose Theory of Semiotics was published in 1976. In meantime term code has found a very wide application. Apart from many valuable contributions to concept, there are also numerous other ones, written by less considerate scholars, creating confusion, entering blind alleys, and often disclaiming all previous work done by others as being irrelevant. In fact, term code has experienced a boom, which like all booms was not all that healthy. Let us try to find some definitions of that can be used in study of literature. Outside our discipline word has been widely used and over a fairly long period of time. The Oxford English
