A leading Kosovar Albanian poet since he published his first volume as a teenager exactly half a century ago, Ali Podrimja was born in 1942 in the town of Gjakova, in western Kosova near the Albanian border. All too fitting for a man whose hometown has its etymology in the Albanian word for blood (gjak), Podrimja’s life and work are inextricably linked to the decades-long movement for national self-determination among the Albanian population in Kosova
