Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide an historiographical review about the evolution of two orthographic signs that often lead to doubts about their use: the semicolon and the colon. In particular, three works about orthography published by the Royal Spanish Academy in 1741, 1844 and 2010 are submitted to analysis. In conclusion, this paper emphasizes that the only use the 1741 edition mentioned regarding the semicolon has remained until the present. In contrast, the colon shows divergence between its employment described in the 1741 edition and the 1844 and 2010 publications. Keywords: orthography; semicolon; colon; Royal Spanish Academy
