Perhaps more than any other contemporary critical theorist, Michel Serres is aware of how extensive is the shift now taking place in the ground of representation. In physics its epicenter is the emerging interdisciplinary research front known as the science of chaos; in mathematics, fractal geometry; in literary theory, deconstruction.' Although these projects are all very different, they share the belief that chaos is not simply the opposite of order, but its precursor, partner, and (for deconstruction) supplanter. From this changed perception of the relation between order and disorder flow multiple implications.
