AS WE APPROACH of this century, which is also of millennium, our vision of is suddenly confronted with a series of unexpected challenges. On one hand, what appeared as well-anchored ideological and political structures are crumbling, and evolution of heartland of Europe--possibly of entire Euro-Asian continent--is shrouded in uncertainty, in which influence of a distant past seems to play an important role, together with intimations of total novelty. Are we thus facing synthesis of tradition and innovation implied in these pages by Rend Girard? On other hand, part of Western society has seemingly reached a post-historical plateau, ideological foundation of which has been heralded as the of history--the to all fundamental change and innovation due to confrontation of ideologies. I wish to touch upon issues of change and stasis in our understanding of human history. In modern liberal societies we tend to consider history as an ever-changing landscape of events and trends interacting in time--an open-ended process. Therefore, how can we integrate notion of an end of history? In order to situate argument in its context, we need to delimit historical consciousness as a field linked to, but distinct from both conceptual historiography and static collective memory
