International Organisations and the Challenges of Globalisation

This article analyses the role of international organisations in the dynamics of globalisation, with a particular focus on their symbolic and normative functions. It highlights the bureaucratic and political constraints on fulfilment of their mandate, and the overriding responsibility of governments in maintaining institutional structures that are incapable of contributing to a significant reduction in mass poverty and environmental degradation. It concludes by asserting the need for new international regulatory controls
