Vincent Diane, "What does sociolinguistics do with discourse analysis and vice-versa ?" Defining sociolinguistics as a social theory of linguistic change and use, the paper notes that discourse analysis (in spite of the difference of use of this term in French and American schools) is starting from the same premisses as the former discipline (corpus, knowledge of the community, taking the interaction into account), but without relying on a pre-existing linguistic description. From these remarks, the author examines sociolinguists' discourse analysis and underlines its originality, as well towards other discourse analyses as towards variationist sociolinguistics.
