Lafontaine Marie Céline, "Musical terminology in Guadeloupe (What creole tells us about ausic)" Within a census and a semantic analysis of folk terminologies about music in Guadeloupe, the analysis of eight chosen terms in the corpus induces the following statement: popular layers of society appeal to their own 'practices' and 'constituted musical objects', and if they do distinguish between several musical 'genres', they include them in a single system of representations which defines the main features of Guadeloupe's music. This discourse does not place itself in the field of the dichotomy "occidental music/african music" that middle and petit-bourgeois classes forward for abstract nationalist reasons in a theoretical debate about identity
