Comprendre le comportement animal et le rapporter à une action signifiante revient à attribuer aux actions animales une forme d'agentivité, rendue visible dans l'ajustement entre les actions des uns (participants humains) et les actions des autres (participants animaux). Dans cet article, nous observons comment les participants humains parviennent à faire des inférences sur les états émotionnels des individus animaux avec lesquels ils interagissent, et ce, de plusieurs manières : soit en formulant explicitement le sens qu'ils pensent pouvoir leur donner (i) ; soit en produisant des formes de ventriloquie, rétablissant la signification supposée d'un comportement dans les termes d'un jeu de langage humain (ii) ; soit en agissant directement de manière ajustée, manifestant ainsi l'intelligibilité qu'ils accordent et la compréhension qu'ils ont des actions de leur coparticipant (iii). Le propos s'appuie sur des données collectées dans différents contextes : interactions entre humains et chiens domestiques dans des foyers, chiens d'assistance auprès de personnes non voyantes, chevaux d'équithérapie, et animaux sauvages dans une réserve naturelle du Moyen Atlas
