In this study, van der Auwera and Plungian discuss earlier accounts of modality, unify them, and propose a diachronic semantic map of this semantic domain. This map integrates the premodal, modal, and post-modal meanings and is claimed to have universal relevance. In the paper, different conventions are used to visualize the types of relationships between meanings (such as hyperonymy, hyponymy, metonymy, and metaphor). This is the first study using the semantic map model that visually combines three different kinds of linguistic information
