The Impact of Migrants From the City on Life in an Orkney Community

Previous research in Britain on the effects of urban-rural migration has focused on commuters and retired people, who while moving from city to country remain economically and socially separate from the receiving community. The present study looks at a new kind of urban-rural migrant - the urban refugee, who moves from city to remote rural area in order to get away from urban life and "become rural". Based on extended field research in Orkney, northern Scotland, the study examines the effects of an influx of urban refugees during the 1970s, analyzing the extent to which they have become integrated into the local community. While the urban incomers have become integrated economically and to some extent socially as well, day-to-day conflicts have led to increasing polarization between migrants and receiving community, and increasing uneasiness among local people about the long-term demographic and cultural implications of the migrants' presence.RésuméEn Grande-Bretagne, les recherches sur les effets des migrations entre villes et campagnes se sont, jusqu'ici, centrées sur les migrations quotidiennes et sur les migrations de retour des retraités, qui, allant de la ville à la campagne, demcurent, économiquement et socialement à l'écart des communautés d'accueil. Cette étude concerne un autre type de migrant: les "réfugiés urbains" qui viennent dans des campagnes reculées pour quitter la vie urbaine et devenir rural. A partir d'une recherche prolongée dans les Orcades - en Ecosse du Nord - l'étude décrit les effets de cet afflux de «réfugiés urbains» dans les années soixante-dix: elle analyse leur degré d'intégration dans la communauté locale. Die vorliegende Studie betrachtet eine neue Art von Stadt-Land-Wanderung - den Stadtflüchter, der von der Stadt in entlegene ländliche Gebiete zieht, um dem Stadtleben zu encfliehen und "ländlich zu werden". Gestützt auf breite Feldforschungen auf den Orkney-Inseln in Nordschottland untersucht die Studie Auswirkungen des Zustroms von Stadtflüchter während der 70er Jahre indem geprüft wird, in welchem Ausmaß sie in die örtliche Wohngemeinde integriert wurden.
