The article reviews extension science from its beginnings to where it is heading now. As the body of knowledge which supports and learns from professionals, managers and trainers in extension, it formulates decision-oriented propositions about communication interventions to change voluntary behaviours with collective effect. The increasing importance of such interventions is explained by public science-based efforts to change behaviour in health, traffic safety, agriculture, etc.; the need for professionalism in the overloaded information market; the determinant role knowledge utilisation acquires in development as essential bottlenecks are removed; and the growing need to adapt intentionality to feasibility. Starting from its original question (how do I get them where I want them?) and its sequel (why don't they do what I want them to do?), the article follows the sequence of extension science emphases: resistance to change, innovation diffusion, target categories, countervailing utili-ser systems and, presently, knowledge systems which see extension, research and utilisers as a synergetic whole.
