AGRICULTURE IN THE WEST OF IRELANDThis article, which is based on a study by the author, examines some of the basic causes of low farm incomes in the West of Ireland. The low income problem in this region has a number of distinct facets. These include difficult physical conditions of production, an adverse situation relating to land tenure and demography, also to economic and other factors, all of which hinder the region's development. Because of an acute lack of alternative employment opportunities roughly 5 j per cent of the active population in the region is engaged in farming. This article has four main sections: 1) a brief examination of the major aspects of the low farm income problem, 2) a description of a pilot area development programme which was initiated in the region in 1964 with a view to identifying the basic causes of low farm incomes in representative pilot farm communities, 3) the outlook for the region's agriculture particularly in the context of the Agricultural Reform Programme of the European Economic Community, and 4) the role which a comprehensive programme for regional development can play in providing a permanent solution to the low income problem.RÉSUMÉL'Agricultwrb Dans L'Ouest de L'IrelandeCet article, fondé sur une étude récente réalisée par l'auteur, propose une explication des causes essentielles des faibles revenus agricoles dans l'Ouest de l'Irlande.
