SummaryA comparison between the agricultural work done by women in the Mediterranean area of Europe and in Africa, shows that women are responsible to a large degree for the production of food crops and also to a fairly large extent for the production of cash crops, which are managed by their husbands and for whom they constitute a cheap source of labour.Women may be owners of land and/or cattle but their possibilities of exploiting these differ between Europe and Africa. In Africa land generally belongs to the community and the use of it may be granted for a given time. Cattle often represents savings or prestige.Women may have management responsibilities, which they exercise more independently in Africa and more discreetly in Europe. The situation of migrants' wives, forced by circumstances to take charge of farm management with no previous training for the job, is the same everywhere. The less developed the country, the more important is the economic role of rural women.
