An increasing number of publications are focused on complex issues surrounding the strategy of integrated rural development. Yet the concept of integrated rural development is increasingly the victim of faddish, unthinking application or dispute. This article presents the origins of the concept, describes four major approaches to defining it and points out the need to ground it better in development theory.ResumeUn nombre croissant de publications sont consacrées aux questions complexes de la stratégic du développement rural intégré. Cependant le concept de développement rural intégré est de plus en plus la victime de discussion ou d'application irréfléchie ou de la mode. Cet article présente les origines de cc concept, décrit quatre approches principales pour lc définir, et insiste sur la nécessité de mieux le fonder dans la théorie du développement.ZusammenfassungEine wachsende Zahl von Veröffentlichungen beschäftigt sich mit komplexen Sachverhalten im Zusammenhang mit der Strategie der integriertcn ländlichen Entwicklung.
