PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION AS A TECHNIQUE IN OBSERVING DECISION MAKINGThree types of participant observation are discussed. Examples from the literature are reviewed to establish the practicability and the validity of three techniques, namely participation by (1) assuming an active function within the system being observed, (2) being a more passive observer, and (3) obtaining the participation of subjects in laboratory experiments. All three types can have their place among the techniques of a modern social science research worker.
