Las alteraciones diagenéticas comprenden aquellos cambios físicos y químicos que experimentan los restos orgánicos (v. g., los tejidos duros) bajo condiciones de enterramiento. En zooarqueología, las investigaciones orientadas a evaluar los efectos de los procesos diagenéticos que operan en los niveles de organización más bajos del hueso -determinantes de su probabilidad de supervivencia en los depósitos arqueológicos- han tenido, hasta el presente, un escaso desarrollo. Con el objetivo de promover e incentivar la práctica de la investigación diagenética, particularmente en el ámbito latinoamericano, este trabajo presenta una síntesis actualizada de los estudios sobre diagénesis ósea en ambientes terrestres. Se resumen los fundamentos de la diagénesis ósea y se describen los parámetros diseñados para su medición. Por último, se propone una estrategia de abordaje del problema útil en contextos de acceso limitado a recursos, como aquellos que caracterizan a nuestra región
