Emil Lask’s conference “Hegel in his relation to the Enlightenment’s Worldview”, translated and introduced by Emmanuel Chaput, clarifies Hegel’s ambivalent relation toward Enlightenment. According to Lask, German Idealism, Hegel included, carries on the Enlightenment’s program according to which the merely-given reality should be submitted to an absolute and rational value. In opposition to Kant and Fichte however, Hegel refuses to understand value as a simple ought to (Sollen), an asymptotic ideal we thrive to reach. As such, Lask describes Hegel not as the philosopher of Restauration, but as a philosopher of Enlightenment who distinguishes values from norms, unlike his predecessors
