This study confronts the musical content of four 19th-century collections of melodies to a socio-genealogical reconstruction of the family backgrounds of their owners, two young ladies from western France, one belonging to the legitimist aristocracy, the other to the catholic upper-middle class. This investigation of musical tastes in western France elites from 1850 to 1914 shows that bourgeois and aristocratic milieux shared a common culture but that this homogeneity involved no one-way imitation of one social group by the other. Among the factors which helped bridge the gap between French bourgeoisie and nobility, an essential part was played by regional major cities which ensured, through their opera houses, concert series, music sellers, etc., the circulation of a common body of information from Paris to provinces
