One of the trends recently apparent in the history of science is an increasing awareness of the importance of factors and influences which had previously been considered unrelated or unimportant to the development of science. Consequently, historical characters and eras which had once seemed sufficiently well-documented and understood now provide intriguing and often surprising new insights when subjected to an inquiry with a broader field of vision. In one manifestation this new historiography now recounts the positive contributions of earlier, discredited modes of thought.. .for example, the continued productivity of Aristotelians in the seventeenth century or the persistence of alchemical notions in the framing of early modem chemistry.
