L'originalite de Monboddo consiste en sa prise de conscience que les formes semantiques du langage ne sont pas que de simples reflexions de formes conceptuelles. Pour lui, le langage est non seulement artificiel dans son stade present (et non naturel comme le supposaient Condillac et Smith), mais encore que les structures syntactiques du langage sont creees pour incarner des distinctions conceptuelles qui ne leur sont pas identiques. Il isole syntaxe et psychologie et ouvre la voie a une distinction entre theorie du langage et theorie de l'intelligence (ou des idees)
