Sur certains usages de la chaîne opératoire au Paléolithique supérieur

Pour rendre compte de leur démarche, les archéologues disent souvent faire parler les objets. Cependant, il ne s’agit pas seulement d’une métaphore illustrative, mais bien du cœur d’une pratique scientifique. Il convient donc de décrire comment se réalise ce dialogue entre défunts, objets et chercheurs. Pour les technologues lithiciens, la chaîne opératoire joue un rôle central qui unifie la discipline. Pourtant, la chaîne opératoire ne peut être considérée comme un outil naturellement efficace qui n’apporterait que les conditions attendues de l’objectivité. Si elle fournit effectivement la base d’un édifice analytique solide, la chaîne opératoire reconduit certains paradigmes qui ne sont pas nécessairement explicites dans les publications. Les usages de la chaîne opératoire peuvent ainsi se répartir en deux pôles qui s’interpénètrent souvent : une fonction-outil et une fonction-révélation
