The Spanish regime and public opinion, by Guy Hermet Until the beginning of the 1950s the Frankist regime was to a certain extent popular not only among the more privileged classes and in the traditional rural circles but also in vast sectors of the middle classes. Later on this passive support of a large fraction of the population might have been eroded as the generation of the civil war gradually lost numerical importance, as the frontiers were opened and the economy flourished. But the team of technocratic ministers, established from 1956 onwards, tried to convince a new political clientele by putting the accent on the rising standard of living, on a certain prudent liberalisation and more generally on the completion of a bourgeois revolution which has not yet been completed in Spain. Faced with this policy the former opposition seems powerless, whilst the newer currents of opposition, among workers, students or the catholics, have become so radical that they have lost all contact with the more moderate desires of the mass of the Spanish people who aspire to prosperity
